GERMANY COCKROACHES
The German cockroach is the most common cockroach species found worldwide. While German cockroach infestations occur in a variety of human occupied spaces, they are most often associated with restaurants, food processing facilities, hotels, nursing homes and other institutional facilities. Keep reading to learn more facts and to get information on German cockroach control.
German cockroaches prefer to live in warm, humid places close to food and moisture sources. They are frequently found in residential and commercial kitchen environments, and bathrooms, so these are the two most likely places for an infestation to occur. It is also likely to find German cockroach dropping in areas they frequent. Droppings may appear as small, dark, “pepper-like” material left on countertops or in drawers. There may also be fecal staining, which appears as dark spots or smears in the corners of rooms, along the tops of doors or around small cracks and openings into walls.
When German cockroach populations are present in large numbers, it may be possible to detect a mild, somewhat “musty” odor.
Wondering how to get rid of German cockroaches? The best advice for German cockroach control is to practice good sanitation. To prevent German cockroaches from infesting a home or business, people should maintain a clean kitchen by cleaning up crumbs, wiping spills and vacuuming often. Avoid leaving dishes pile up in the sink. It is also important to seal all entrances to the structure, especially around utility pipes, and ventilate crawl spaces to prevent moisture buildup. 2. AMERICAN COCKROACHES.
The American cockroach is the largest of the house-infesting roaches. They are most commonly found in restaurants, grocery stores, bakeries, breweries, pet shops and other establishments where food is prepared or stored. They are often found in damp sewers and basements, in heating ducts under hospitals, and on the first floors of buildings. They can be transported into homes and apartments in boxes from infested establishments. Roaches can foul food, damage wallpaper, books and clothing, and produce an unpleasant odor. Some home owners are allergic to roaches and the pests can contaminate food with certain bacterial diseases that result in food poisoning, dysentery, or diarrhea. Cockroaches can cause childhood asthma.
Most cockroaches have a flattened oval shape, spiny legs, and grow long, filamentous antennae. Immature stages are smaller, have undeveloped wings and resemble adults. Adult American cockroaches are reddish-brown to dark brown (except for a tan or light yellow band around the shield behind the head), about 1-1/2 to 2-inches long, and have wings capable of flight. Males and females are about the same size. The wings are about the same length as the body (abdomen) in the females and longer in the males, extending slightly beyond the abdomen. Females have a broader abdomen, while the males have both cerci (pair of appendages at the end of the abdomen) and styli (short, slender, finger-like process). Nymphs are wingless, uniformly brown colored, and run very fast. Egg capsules are mahogany brown and about 1/3-inch long.
American roaches can move from one building to the next during the summer, entering through cracks in foundations, around loose-fitting doors or windows, and along water and gas pipes. Seal openings with putty or plastic wood. Inspect sacks, cartons and boxes, etc., brought into the home and destroy any roaches. Sanitation is critical in roach control. Clean up spilled foods and liquids, avoid leaving scraps of food on unwashed dishes and counter tops, keep food in tightly sealed containers, rinse cans and bottles before putting in trash and transfer garbage outdoors into roach-proof receptacles. If a severe cockroach infestation develops or if you are in doubt as to the control measures to use, contact us FUMSBORN SOLUTIONS to deal with this infestation.
3.ORIENTAL COCKROACHES
Originating from the Black and Caspian Seas, oriental cockroaches are large, shiny and dark brown or almost black in color. While most cockroach species live off of human warmth and waste, oriental cockroaches remain outdoor scavengers. These cockroaches typically live in sewers and thrive on wet and decaying organic matter. This species of cockroach often travels through sewer pipes, surviving on filth and enjoying temperatures between 68 to 84 degrees. Favoring cooler temperatures, oriental cockroaches will indulge on starchy human scraps, but they mostly enjoy a natural diet of decaying plant and animal matter. Living less than 180 days, female oriental cockroaches produce up to eight egg cases with 16 eggs per case. Female oriental cockroaches carry their egg capsules around for 30 hours before dropping them in a safe, protected area. Sixty days later, the nymphs hatch and reach maturity six to 12 months later. Pale, tan-colored nymphs are active March through summer and may molt seven to 10 times before they reach maturity in the fall.
One of the more dangerous cockroaches in terms of bacteria and pathogens, the oriental cockroach’s strong drive toward water often leads them to sewers and other sources of bacteria-ridden water. They also love eating garbage and decomposing food.
Oriental cockroaches typically transfer bacteria and viruses from their legs to food, dishes, utensils and countertops and are known to spread dysentery, e. coli, salmonella and food poisoning. These pests can contaminate your food and kitchen surfaces, which may make you or your family sick.
Gaining entry under doors, gaps beneath siding, pipes, open drains or sewers, you can keep oriental cockroaches away by keeping your house clean and, more importantly, dry.
Good sanitation and habitat reduction, along with vacuuming, surveillance, baiting and sealing up cracks can quickly reduce or eliminate a cockroach population. Since these trash-loving beasts love the scent of decaying garbage, it’s important to keep your trashcans closed and secure.
Outside, caulk all holes, stop water leaks, screen or cap drains, remove rotting leaves from window wells, move garbage cans out of wet areas and ventilate moist spaces.
